Larry Kenneth Mitchelson

Larry Kenneth Mitchelson, beloved husband, father, brother and dedicated educator, passed away suddenly on June 2, 2024, at the age of 76. Born on August 28, 1947 to Ken and Jane (Yandoh) Mitchelson, Larry grew up in Oswego, NY and spent many days during his youth working at the Mitchelson Dairy Farm. After graduating from the State University of New York at Oswego, he devoted his life to sharing his passion for creativity by nurturing young minds as a public elementary school art teacher for 35 years in the Fulton (NY) School District. Affectionately known as “Mr. Mitch,” he earned the respect of multiple generations of students and the greater Fulton community as a teacher and gifted artist. Larry's work ethic and commitment to the arts extended beyond the classroom. He frequently judged local art competitions, organized public art shows to proudly display his students’ creations. He also collaborated with students to paint seasonal murals in the windows of businesses helping to foster a love for art in the community. An avid painter and wood crafter, Larry found great joy and peace in his artwork. Outside of work, Larry played competitive volleyball and softball. Larry loved coming together with his best friends for a round of golf. He was known on the golf course as "one-putt," a testament to his skill and love for the game. He was a loyal fan of the New York Yankees and experienced several magical moments at games, attended events to meet players and coaches past and present and collected memorabilia. A family man to the core, Larry's warmth, humor and devotion to his loved ones were evident in all he did. His quick wit and sense of humor brought smiles and laughter to everyone who knew him. His family and friends will forever cherish the memories of his kindness, creativity, and playful spirit. Perhaps Larry’s biggest accomplishment was during his early college years when he summoned the courage to introduce himself to a young coed student, Dianne. Their love story of more than 55 years, has been a role model that many aspire to achieve. Dianne will miss him dearly. Larry is also survived by his two sons, Randy (Susan) and Kris; brothers Ron (Sarah), Steve (Sherry), and sister Cathy; niece (Emily), nephews (Matt, John, and R.J.) and his grand fur babies. A graveside service will be held to honor Larry's life and legacy on Monday, June 10 at 10 a.m. at Oak Hill Burial Park, 4620 US Hwy 98 S., Lakeland, Fla. A reception will follow at the Citrus Woods Clubhouse, 1610 Reynolds Rd., Lakeland, Fla. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Larry's memory to the Larry Mitchelson Scholarship Foundation. The scholarship foundation was established at Larry’s retirement in 2003 and helps high school students pursue their dream of higher education in the fine arts.
